As kids, we performed various activities learning how to use our bodies in different ways. How do we throw a ball? Which arm has a better aim? Which arm is stronger? But most of the time, we were not even thinking about all of this. We were just doing it!
Go to a kid's playground and pay attention to what the children are doing. Climbing ropes, going down a slide, jumping from different heights, etc. They are trying to learn how to use their "body machine."
How do we coordinate each piece of our body to do what we intend to achieve (or sometimes we just trust our luck and try things that we know might not end well 🤣)?
Kids are trying to develop their motor coordination. It is the ability to control your own body to do the action you intended. It's a vital skill to grow through life (and adapt when time goes by and things are not the same anymore, right? 🤪)
Motor coordination is not to be used only when you are sitting and reaching for your cup of coffee ☕(while avoiding knocking over things and splashing coffee all over your books and computer). It's designed to use, especially when you are active and moving.
Ballroom dancing can significantly impact teaching you how to control your body movements and develop your motor coordination. And this is not only for kids. Anyone can start creating and improving this ability at any time. Or do you think you can only learn ballroom dancing as a kid? (Don't ask me when I started 🤫).
To dance, you need your whole body to be moving under constant control to create the patterns and the steps you intended. You try not to allow any "disagreement" between body parts to happen (We are not talking about the partnership, ok?).
The upper body has to agree with the lower body on where to go and how to get there. The head, torso, hips, legs, and feet have to communicate and find an understanding with each other. And with time and practice, we can start to use each part in separate ways to create different effects and styles. 💃🕺
So tell me, how many different ways can you move your arms gracefully? Or powerfully? Just turn on your music and find out!
Big hugs!
