I remember when I took a yoga class, and the instructor told me that she would teach me how to breathe.
I was thinking, “How am I alive if I already don’t know that?” By the end of the class, I realized what she meant.😱
The same can happen with ballroom dancing. When I heard that I would learn “how to walk,” it sounded crazy. I’ve been walking for a long time in my life (and running and sometimes falling 🤣).
Have you ever counted how many steps you take in a day? (Ok, watches and gadgets can do it for you now 😝).
However, have you ever paid close attention to what is happening with your feet when walking?
How much pressure are you applying for a long stride🦵? For a quickstep? And where exactly is the pressure applied on the foot 🦶? How about when you change directions?
Ballroom dancing will dive deep into this with time. It will help you develop your body awareness and understand how each part of your body needs to adjust to create the movement you intended to do.
Besides, you will be amazed at how often we tend to live on “autopilot mode.”.
Your sense of body awareness can change how you interact with your environment. It may help prevent some overuse of vulnerable parts, like your knees or your back.
Your new “found” body awareness can make you feel more alive and have more respect for everything your body can do. Just think - how many muscles do you move to create a smile? Or when you dance the move that you love? 💃🕺
Big hugs!!
